Welcome to Hemispheres Day.

Subject: Social Studies – Geography.

Today you will identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night).

Session 1

Hemispheres

Map: A representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features.

Globe: A spherical representation of earth.

Scale: The ratio between a distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the earth.

Hemisphere: A half of the earth, usually as divided into northern and southern halves by the equator, or into western and eastern halves by the Prime Meridian.

The Northern Hemisphere.

This is the northern hemisphere.

The centre of the northern hemisphere is The Arctic Circle.

The Southern Hemisphere.

This is the southern hemisphere.

The centre of the southern hemisphere is The Antarctic Circle.

Latitude & Longitude

Equator: An imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres.

Latitude: The distance of any object from the equator measured in degrees.

Longitude: The distance east or west on the earth’s surface measured in degrees.

The Tropics.

The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are latitudinal lines. The Tropic of Cancer is in the northern hemisphere. The Tropic of Capricorn is in the southern hemisphere.
